Should you do a Whole30?

Blog | July 25, 2018 | By

So you have heard that doing a Whole30 is great for your body and you’ve seen co-workers, family and random instagrammers achieve amazing health results.

In the back of your mind you might be thinking: Should I do a Whole30?

Let’s be honest, most people are not feeling 100% and we tend to tolerate various symptoms like feeling sluggish or bloated because we don’t really know how to change it. Most of us wish we were getting better sleep or waking up refreshed. And most of us eat too much sugar and processed carbs, but it’s hard to rein it in.

Whole30 is the best programme I know to give your body and mind a fresh beginning. One of my favorite things about doing a Whole30 is the amazing clear mind and boundless energy I have – like I’ve had the best coffee that lasts all day!

So if you’re still not sure Whole30 is right for you, check to see my recommendations.

You should do a Whole30 if…

  • You are ready to commit to the rules 100% for 30 days
  • You want to lose weight
  • You think you might have an intolerance to dairy, gluten, soy, corn
  • You have brain fog, poor sleep, low energy
  • You want to learn to eat healthier
  • You want to be in control of your health and cravings
  • You skip breakfast
  • You are tired of having afternoon energy slumps
  • You suffer with gut issues
  • You snack throughout the day and are often hungry
  • You have a less than healthy relationship with comfort foods like chocolate, wine, chips or cake.
  • You eat healthy some days and then overindulge in moments of weakness
  • Your hormones are off ballance
  • You would like to rely less on takeaways and convenience foods
  • You have regular digestive complaints like constipation or diarrhea
  • You crave carbs like bread, chips, pasta, rice, potato, wine
  • You would like to learn how to cook easy healthy meals
  • You want to create a healthier lifestyle and something you can stick with

You might be ready to do a Whole30…

  • If you are on medications for a chronic condition like diabetes – consult your doctor before changing your diet
  • You are a vegetarian/vegan – Whole30 is based on a Paleolithic framework. It works so well because it removes many of the inflammatory foods that vegetarians enjoy like legumes, grains and dairy. If you really want to get the most out of Whole30 please consider including organic and sustainably raised eggs and fish (or other animal protein) for 30 days so you can do Whole30 as written.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding – Whole30 has helped many mamas and there is a special section in the Whole30 as well as Healthy Mama, Happy Baby.
  • You have ongoing health concerns that doctors have not been able to help get to the bottom of – thyroid issues, adrenal fatigue, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia. Whole30 can help with these issues but it is best to work with a Doctor or health professional with experience of ancestral/paleo/autoimmune diets.

You are not ready to do a Whole30 if…

  • You are super stressed – Whole30 will challenge you so it is best not to be in overwhelm when you begin. I recommend you come back to Whole30 in the future when you are ready to take it on.
  • You have food anxiety, disordered eating or an obsession with eating foods that one considers “healthy”. Because Whole30 is very black and white, it can trigger more obsessive tendencies in people prone to this. It is possible to work with a psychologist experienced in disordered eating and carefully apply this learning to Whole30.
  • You are under 16 years old. While a Paleo template is perfectly healthy for children, the Whole30 can be adjusted for children to include more meals however it is a bit too challenging for children.
